Tech News
Todays Program has been pre-recorded. Leo is not taking calls this week
11a-Noon
Q Grace in Burbank - Ebay
D:ToolsReskitNetadminPoledit
http://www.zisman.ca/poledit/
Q Ken in Thousand Oaks - DVD writer software
Nero
Backup tool in Acronis Disk Director Suite is good, but may be too much if you don’t need the other tools.
QBarbara in Lake Forest - HP Pavilion
USB port and 9 in one reader
Mike - I have a similar problem with my HP Pavilion. My problem was traced to an under powered power supply. I had installed a new Display Card that drew enough power to cause the card reader to fail when anything was plugged into the front USB port. The card reader icons would disappear and the device manager would not show these devices. When I unplugged the USB device the card reader worked fine. The rear USB ports were unaffected.
QCory in Barstow - Dell Inspiron 50
XP

QDaniel in Los Angeles - duplicate remover

Q Harry in New York

SpywareBlaster
WPA encryption

Noon-1p
QLori in Rancho Cucamonga - Password fatigue
chmod 644 ~/Library/Keychains/Username
QJoan in Sacramento - disk full error
JST3751 - Could this have to do with a less than 10% disk space remaining error?
MichianaMCR says: It’s possible that Joan’s problem stems from the limitations on the total number of files allowed per volume. Fat32 only allows 4,177,920 files per disk volume. NTFS allows 4,294,967,295 files. Due to file limitations, enhanced security, larger file sizes and other concerns, NTFS is highly recommended for all Windows installs that are not part of a multi-boot system where access to NTFS partitions would be necessary from Windows 9x or Linux systems.
KianTech says: The caller already said she had NTFS so that is not the problem. I think she should just format and reinstall everything from scratch.
Q Paul in Anaheim - my first laptop
512MB
Q Gary in Yucaipa - extending sound recorder
record 60 seconds, copy it, then paste it in again and again
KuNgFuAzN: Instead of sound recorder, I use Windows Movie Maker. Windows Movie Maker comes with every Windows machine. Inside Windows Movie Maker, you can hit the microphone icon and record sound as long as you want. Windows Movie Maker can export that as a WMA or WAV. Much more convienent that sound recorder.
zip drive
1–2p
Q Kyle in Columbus, OH - Backup DVDs
DVD Shrink
KuNgFuAzN: I am noticing that DVD Shrink cannot get through some forms of encryption. A good program is DVD Decrypter, it can get through all encryption for back up. The down side is that it will save the file in the true size of the DVD. This means you may need a dual layer DVD to back up your movie.
MichianaMCR says: A great way to create archive copies of DVD’s is to use DVD Decrypter to pull the vob files to the hard drive while removing macrovision and zone limitations. Then use Roxio Disc Copier (part of the Roxio suite) to create an ISO image of the DVD from the vob files in the size you want. You can choose dual layer or single layer DVD for the final file size. After creating the ISO, use Disc Copier to copy the ISO image to a DVD blank and store your original DVD in a safe place to prevent scratches and other damage. Roxio Disc Copier also allows you to choose languages to exclude, as well as copying only the movie instead of all extras, to limit the compression on the final disc.
Q Karl in San Diego - selling software
www.lulu.com
Q Steve in Santa Clarita - XP installed
Q Diana in Burbank - starting an online business
www.BuyMyHeadshots.com
kbandy: Evidently, Diana didn’t get the above domain in time—it appears to be an online furniture store now.
This particular show was prerecorded off the air before February 4th 1006, and Leo gave Diana a fair warning about it.
Q Paul in Tustin - clean install of Windows 98
Chat Logs and Show Audio

Just because ebay has a problem with her account it doesn’t have anything to do with her computer, it’s on their servers. She shouldn’t be installing any toolbars! Too late now but nice to know for the future, Just Say No!
Rodney, netspan.tv seems to be out of service. Bush must have taken it down because I can’t ping it. LOL
Joan in Sacramento - disk full error.
It could be that the BIOS is corrupted and reporting the correct drive size but not allowing the drives to write beyond a physical limit. Try to reflash the latest firmware of your systemboard.
Joan in Sacramento - This seems quite unlikely, but I’ll throw it out there anyways because I can’t think of anything else. It could be that disk quotas somehow got turned on, and so even though there is still space left on the disk, your quota is used up and it won’t let you add anything else. Doesn’t seem likely, but it could be.
Joan in Sacramento-For a simple possible solution have you checked for a floppy left in the drive? That will do it.
re disk full sacramento
had the same problem
using vopt saw files filling the last sectors on the hard drive. ran scan disk several times and that removed those files. everything then workd fine.

Joan in Sacramento
I had a similiar problem on a 128mb kingston digital memory disk.
it ran out of space only half full because the file information table was not large enough to put any more entries in it.
Is it possible you have too many folders in that area and it won’t accept anymore unless you delete some of them or make it larger?
Has anyone ever heard of DVD43? It works pretty well for decrypting DVD’s and is its for free(4,3, get it?) I use 1ClickDVDCopy with it, works like a dream.
Leo, the rigamarole with a boot floppy just to format a WinXP drive is unnecessary. Just have him download DBAN, Autoclave, (both very small, a few meg at most) or Ultimate Boot CD (both, very large, but also offers a wealth of tools), use the ISO to burn a booable CD, and use that to erase the drive.

A big feature of multicore processors which Leo left out is ‘virtualllization’, down the road towards the end of this year. It allows you to run two operating systems simultaneously. For users hopelessly hooked on Windows, this means you can run your Firefox browser under a more secure OS (Linux, anyone?) and dodge 100% of the spyware and 98% of the malware out there or coming later.
Has Dianne in Burbank realized she blew it mentioning her URL idea on last week’s show? Sure enough, a cybersquatter snapped it up. Go figure!

Leo,
Let me add to the Dell horor stories. I’ve got three Dell 8400 units with 3-year coverage. (Corporate pricing makes it worth it).
1. Unit one was fine
2. Unit two, was missing the front cover on delivery
3. Unit three had a failed boot drive
On Unit 2, I spent two hours trying to argue with the rep that a software restore wouldn’t do anyhthing as I couldn’t understand how a CD software install would make plastic appear on the case. There’s no point in trying to argue. He INSISTED on my doing a restore. I did it on a spare machine and SURPRISE, the machine in question STILL needed a front cover.
Unit 3, I was again, forced to do a restore — it didn’t work very well, and since I had Spinrite, I KNEW the drive was failing.
Sadly, this is BUSINESS CLASS support. I can only imagine how bad home support must be.
For the caller who cannot get onto the net because of a leftover “something” in the works…would downloading “AdAware” from another computer, putting it on a disc and then running it(maybe a couple of times) do some good?
I had a like problem a while ago and AdAware saved me a trip to the shop!
For the guy who upgraded from WebTV to a new computer and needs to know how to use it, if he doesn’t like reading a lot of books and learning it on his own he should take a Beginning Computer User class at his local Community College. Most of them have very good beginner classes that teach you everything you need to know and they aren’t very expensive.
Related to customer sevice: I got something to really whine about:
DSLEXTREME

General Manager

Dear Friend,
I always had enjoyed the overall service from your company. However, that changed on Thu 02/09/2006 about 10:00pm.
A service support guy who goes by first name as John, (?); changed the good image and satisfaction that I had.
At the beginning, he shown a tough, arrogant tone of voice, (very fast, flat pitch tone, didn’t even said hi). So far, ok with me.
After following his instructions, he asked what kind of settings I had, where I got that, My response was from the package I received and your website, of course. Following more instructions, I tried to ask him about some advanced settings that I manually changed, but he interrupted me several occasions and finally said: “Are you going to do what I said or what?”
Now that really got me angry. My response was: Well how come somebody changed my configurations (In your Central, from PPPoE to DCHP) without telling me, what the F. (I apologize to you)
Then he yelled: “I dare you that swearing is not allowed to us, is in our terms of service!”
Then I just realized that I was as angry as he was, but hey, I was in a very good mood and happy at the beginning of the call, due to an upgraded router that I just bought.
Anyway, who is he to treat any customer like that, and interrupting before I could even finish my sentences?
I am paying for the service, is not like receiving something for free. If the guy does not like to help people to solve technical problems, I wonder why is he doing working there?
Now that’s very different from every other calls to dsl tech support I ever had. But I will not tolerate this, because this is not what I pay for.
The promise of a better tech support is one of the reasons I moved from Adelphia. But so far I was never treated with such rude, arrogant or impatience way when I was their customer. And I never experienced the connectivity problems that I am having right now with DSL EXTREME.
Therefore, I want to terminate my service immediately. And given the circumstances, I think it would be immoral and ridiculous to charge me for early termination fee. I am requesting you to cancel THE EARLY TERMINATION FEE.
Thank you.

If none of the solutions other commentors have posted for Joan in Sacramento work for her. Saving her data might be possible if she has a CDR or other burnable optical media. Burn the data she wants to save on a CD, then use the CD to transfer data to the new drive. That should keep her from having anything that holds any of the settings in her system at the same time as the new drive. It would be nicer to fix the problem but saving data is the bottom line.

To Lori in Rancho Cucamonga - Password fatigue
If you can, try Keychain Repair. Login to Keychain in your Utilities Folder and choose repair Keychain from the Menu.
Don’t use your “everyday account” as an Administrator. Use another dummy account as an Administrator and your everyday account as a Standard User.
To Lori in Rancho Cucamonga - Password fatigue
Password Reset (via CD) will not reset your keychain password. This would be a security hole in the keychain mechanism. The keychain password is only changed via the Keychain Access util, or when you change your login password in System Preferences.
In addition, Keychain passwords are not reset when an admin user resets another user’s password.
If you’ve forgotten your keychain password, and just want to get rid of the annoying dialogs, just toss the ~/Library/Keychains folder, then log out and back in. The system will create a new keychain folder & keychain for you.
Barbara—USB/Card Reader
try plugging it in to the other socket on the motherboard. I had the same problem, and that solved it for me

Barbara - USB Card reader
I have found some motherboards that allow you to disable the front USB ports on a PC. This is a security feature for kiosk PCs or work PCs that the administrator doesn’t want people to have access to those ports. It’s possible that they default to “off/disabled.”
Paul - Laptop
I repair PCs as part of my job. I have found that the business class machines are definitely worth the extra money. They are sturdier, stronger, and more powerful. I recently purchased an HP tc4200 TabletPC. I saved over $1000 by buying refurbished and it has the exact same warranty and features as a new retail item. I paid about $1500 for it with accessories.

Harry in New York
I also wish to lodge a complaint on this spyware throught teens. My parents are constantly killing their computers with reckless internet use. I finally got them over to Firefox and have antivirus and antispyware software that secretly runs at night. Also like Harry I do work for my schools network and have learned alot from this show and just being around computers.
ps. I’m 17

Shouldn’t the link to that woman’s site be deleted?? (the one about the head shots) since she announced the URL on the air, somebody bought it the day after the show, Leo should have told her that she would need to buy it within a few minutes…

Grace in Burbank - Ebay
She can not edit her IE settings.
This can be due to some security programs e.g. MS Antispyware/defender.
One way around this is to NOT use the “Tools - Internet Options” from within IE, but to go to “Start - Settings and select Internet Options from there. On my machine MS Antispyware or Spybot (can’t remember which) have locked down the options from within IE, but I can still access it from the start - settings menu. Last comment is drop IE and use e.g. Firefox.

Robert
