I’m going to keep answering calls for an extra hour today - so keep those calls coming through 3p Pacific: 800–520–1534.

Tech News

11a-Noon

QJohn in West Palm Beach - sharing external harddrive

He can share one external hard drive but not the other. It works when he boots into Safe Mode. Sounds like ZoneAlarm is blocking. Sometimes it does this even when turned off. I recommend the free Kerio Personal Firewall if you must use a software firewall.

QFrank in Culver City - using external DVD for backup

Good idea. I recommend inexpensive Lite-On DVD burners. Lite-On was the manufacturer for some of Sony’s DVD burners.

Gold Digger: I don’t know about Lite-On. I bought a cheap Memorex for $70. It does everything CD-R, RW and DVD-RW and so on. I got Nero with it.

QStu in Madisonville, KY - The “My Computer” folder opens on boot

This has been a common problem with Windows since 95! Something is starting up. I recommend downloading and installing Codestuff’s Starter - this is msconfig on steroids. Look for programs that startup in the registry with the Run command.

This Microsoft newsgroup discussion offers some other ideas.

Noon-1p

QHoward in Huntington Beach - permanent printer jam

try cleaning the guts with compressed air - if the sensor is dusty it will report a spurious paper jam.

Ted in Madison, WI adds: This is fixable! See the thread http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/22650 and see the two posts by Ted5382 (one asking for help, and a second what I discovered). Good luck!

QJim in Rialto - Firefox window won’t fill the screen

He installed an incompatible theme and now the window stops three inches from the bottom of his screen and he can’t get it any bigger. Best way to fix this is to backup your bookmarks and cookies, uninstall Firefox, then delete the Mozilla folder (it’s in Documents and SettingsYOURLOGINApplication Data), and reinstall.

Marty in Van Nuys adds: RE: FireFox ver 1.5 upgrade
I had SAME DEFECT of 3 inch blank margin at bottom of FF winndow. This is a published bug with FF 1.5. It has to do with incompatibility of previous FF PLUGINs & EXTENSIONS.
REMEDY: Start FireFox in SAFE MODE and disable PLUGINs & EXTENSIONS by check boxes in startup window, then clik CONTINUE.
This will fix the problem.

QJanet in Santa Ana - digitizing slides

You can pay a service to do this (very expensive), buy a slide scanner (expensive and time consuming), or use a scaner like the Epson Pefection 1670 that supports slide scanning with a light in the lid (inexpensive but still time consuming). Don’t buy those silly mirror convertors - they don’t work well at all.

QEric in Agoura Hills - Quickbooks and the new Mac

I don’t know when Intuit plans to release the Intel version, but the existing version should run fine in emulation. Quickbooks isn’t that try.

QMark in London, KY - new sound card killed my PC

QCheryl in Canyon Lake - switching to Mac

Apple’s switch site is mostly advertising, but there’s some useful stuff there. I do recommend David Pogue’s Switching to Mac even though it’s a few years old. My book also has some very good information on switching: Leo Laporte’s Guide to OS X Tiger.

The best guide for switching is Take Control of Switching to the Mac.

I’d also recommend junking the Mac mouse and use a standard three-button Windows mouse. And Quicksilver is an excellent addition to the user interface.

1–2p

QTim in Arcadia - HDTV decisions

1080p is very cool, but where’s the programming? And if you’ve got a tuner (i.e. a cable or satellite box) who needs a tuner in the TV?

Mike_B says: CableCard® FAQ can be found at http://ecoustics-cnet.com.com/2100-1041_3-5542400.html?part=ecoustics-cnet
Also, by law, all cable companies must offer CableCard® this year.

QJudd in San Dimas - Viewsonic monitor is twitchy

MichianaMCR says: If the new monitor cable that Leo recommended does not work, ensure that the monitor cable does not run beside the power cables for the computer or monitor. Electrical crosstalk from the power cables can cause the jittery screen that Judd described.

QFrances in Pasadena - buying an iBook for a 7th grader

Go for it.

QKaren in Glendale - mouse maintenance

Don’t spray WD40 in your mechanical mouse. In fact, dump the mechanical mouse and get an optical. Even an inexpensive optical will be better and more reliable.

  • davth*** added: Actually, Walmart has a nice comfortable wireless optical mouse with a dock to recharge the AA batteries in it for $35. It is made by HP.

QDonald in San Diego - dead Dell

Sounds like the power supply. www.pcpowerandcooling.com

Mike adds - Dell uses a slightly different wiring in its power supplies than the ATX standard so you cannot simply replace it with a standard ATX power supply, you need to get one from Dell or eBay.

ChrisS1563 adds:

LEO: That sound bite you have is from the movie MEN AT WORK with Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen..

Steve in Newbury Park says;
Nope it was from “Better Off Dead”, as the caller said, see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088794/quotes for the quote.

Leo,

As many times as people have said “I can’t get the stream. How do I get it on $X_platform?”, ISTM it would warrant a Get the Stream link in the left column (perhaps between Tips and FAQ.

29 January 2006

11:08 by Justin in Fort Myers, FL?.

Hey Leo, Know you’re a Konfabulator fan (aka Yahoo Widget Engine now) just found a KFI stream widget yesterday, windows only at the moment, but a great way to get right to the stream!

11:21 by Selfcentered Billionare?.

Always Quick to DEFEND Steve Jobs is Leo, So Where’s the PROOF!!!?? Don’t you think that Apple’s PR People would want to PUBLICIZE Financial Donations??

Here IS a bit of Negative Proof the Jobs is Self-Centered and in my Opinion SELFISH!
Steve Jobs is trying to tear down a George Washington Smith-designed Historic Home in Woodside California. This house is a one of a kind and decleared a Calif. Historic Treasure!

This is only an opinion, NOT FACT (ed.)

IT’S THEIR MONEY I DON’T CARE HOW THEY SPEND IT.

11:30 by .

Regarding Leo’s comments during the intro of today’s show (Sunday - how appropriate!) regarding the charitable efforts of Gates vs. Jobs, here is the biblical reference (actually Christ’s words to his disciples) which he was referring to:

Matthew 6:1–4
Giving to the Needy
“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Wise words indeed.. keep up the good work Leo

11:32 by .

Also, we have no way of knowing yet what Jobs will do with that money. Bill has 10 or more times that much money and is racking in billions all the time. Jobs isn’t quite up there, yet, if ever. However, he could be using that money it put it back into either business, or will start another business. Time will tell. Gates went years before he decided to start giving it away and by then he had 10+ digit bank balance.

So give it time, and as saw said, it is their money, their choice what they want to do with it.

For by Jeff in Santa Ana: “… try this URL for the stream as it seems they changed it again.”—John Horvatic (Show #215 Comments)

http://a814.l1977144512.c1977.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/814/19771/v0001/reflector:44512

 Jeff in Santa Ana replies:
I’m not the one with the problem. (I receive the broadcast just fine.)
I’m referring to the abundance of posts that say
**I’m having a problem getting the stream with $OS/$Media_Player.**
What I am saying is that a single page that consolidates the tips
(and a high-profile link for it) seems apt.
12:06 by David V?.

Leo what was the name of tha firewall you reconmended still using sygate and a little out of date

12:11 by Gary C?.

i use zonelabs pro version 6 and i have no problems it is the best firewall you can buy.

12:13 by Spokavriel.

Leo About the paper jam error.

Most HP Printers have a little switch with a roller on it that tells it when paper is in place or not.
Older ones have a little metal tab that makes contact when there isn’t paper.
Sometimes just running a sheet of paper through to make sure the path is clear is all it takes to fix it.

12:17 by Andy P?.

Leo mentioned Kerio Personal Firewall at the beginning of the show.. both free and paid versions available for download at: www.sunbelt-software.com

12:21 by Al in La Paz, Mexico?.

I had the same Firefox problem….large white space at the bottom of the screen. Removing and reinstalling extensions solved the problem for me.

12:23 by Santa Rosa Steve?.

For David V: The firewall Leo recommended is Kerio Personal Firewall.

Publisher: Sunbelt Software
Web page: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall 4 can run in a free mode vs. a full (paid) mode. Install it now, and for the first 30 days it will run in ‘full’ mode. After that, it shuts down selected features, but will continue to run in ‘free’ mode.

Is it possible to access KFI using Windows Media Player. I tried doing a search for KFI but nothing came up. Several other stations in LA were displayed but not KFI. Why ? Hello from UK.

12:39 by Nick.

Leo,

About sharing the external hard drive, it could be also a drive letter issue.. (Lastdrive=z) scenario.. I had that problem in the past.. Just a thought..

12:40 by jccalhoun?.

Ben — go to the chat room and they will give you a direct link to the stream

12:45 by Ted?.

Here’s another opinion about the MacIntels …

“Apple’s Core Duo Performance Claims Don’t Quite Live Up to the Hype” read on:
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=415

You did it just right (the title is the summary + a link).
I don’t think it is the dissent at which people bristle.
It’s the the one-note samba that drones on and on.
12:49 by .

RE:Janet in Santa Ana - digitizing slides ,I had good results setting up the side projector to project the slides on a screen in a small size I use 6″ wide by 4″height then use my digital camera to take the picture, then transfer to pc, disk or dvd try it if you have a good camera and a dark room its also much faster then scanning

12:51 by Spokavriel.

Caller replaced video card after giving old one to Mom

This Video card replacment may be too powerfull for his old power suply.
The Bios may also not be compatible with the AGP Multiple of the newer card that could also keep it from displaying if the mobo is toooo old for it.

13:01 by Justin in Fort Myers, FL?.

for this new mac user: check the “Screencasts Online” video podcast for tutorials and software reviews to help

13:15 by JZA.

to whats going on:

I agree, Linux has a larger percentage of use than Mac, so I will like for KFI push Linux more. And at least you are not playing favor for any PR agency.

Got a link to your stats?
13:31 by Joe in Inglewood?.

Listener who gave sound card to mom: any serious hardware problem will cause a no video situation, check your memory, cables, cpu, try reemoving all but the bare essentials - I. E. sound card, LAN card, any other cards except video, try swapping out memory if you have say 4 try 2, try a pci video card if you have one, with all other cards removed.

13:31 by Ruben?.

Hey Leo!! Re: HDTV & integrated tuners. YES - it is recommended to get an integrated tuner so you can use a cable card instaed of the box. Interactive cable cards are comming out soon - no need for the box UNLESS you don’t have an integrated tuner. Why opt for the cable box when you can eliminate it and use a card instead!! Of course, the hdtv needs a cable card slot also.

13:40 by Jeff in Santa Ana?.

Leo,

There is a problem with the way the wiki software auto-converts things with forward slashes to spelled-out dates. (See the link in Selfcentered Billionare’s post).
Can this be turned off?

13:40 by DNurse?.

I have Direct TV and I tried searching for Call For Help, but the search doesn’t direct me to Call for Help, did the bright ones and G4 remove the show?

Justin in Fort Myers, FL-
last i heard they stopped carrying it in the USA

13:43 by Bob in Simi Valley?.

Adelphi in Simi Valley does “provide and support” cable card. There is a monthly charge for the card of around $7 per month. The limitation is that any two-way communication is not possible. This means no pay-per-view, no video-on-demand.

13:48 by Mike in Gatlinburg, TN ?.

I live in a really podunk, remote, low population served by Charter Cable and they offer cable cards for $1.50 per month.

13:57 by Spokavriel.

Throwing away a Perfectly Good White Boy

It’s from Another 48 Hours I have the same sound clip.

14:09 by anonymous.

Wrong Spokavriel….That sound bite is from the movie MEN AT WORK with Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen..

14:11 by Ruben?.

Interactive cable cards - 2 way communication - are being developed now. Extra charges for ppv & vod will be done on account or by credit card.

14:26 by Ron_J?.

Green light on mobo but pc won’t start and no fan noise could just be a bad start switch. I’d check that out before buying a new power supply!

14:58 by Andy P?.

You know what? Leo may indeed come across like he is favoring Macs over Windows (in some cases he clearly is, particularly for new computer users), but he backs up his views with both facts as well as his many, many years as a computer industry journalist and professional.

I, for one, would trust his opinions over these pathetic trolls who have nothing better to do with their time than repeatedly posting the same extremist (and usually misspelled) anti-Mac tripe they have culled off some website. Do these cretins have the same amount and depth of experience with both Macs and Windows which Leo has? I rather doubt it.

The fact that some of these comments go so far as to insult and actually slander Leo for no other reason than he points out various Windows issues which are not currently issues on Macs, this should tell you something.. it has nothing to do with a reasoned debate on the pros and cons of the two computing platforms. These grandstanding bozos merely want to stir things up in order to draw attention to themselves – again, how sadly pathetic.

Keep in mind that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that doesn’t mean that all opinions are of equal value. In fact, some people’s opinions aren’t worth a flip. I am glad that Leo is able to remove most of the inflammatory comments here, the lame protests of censorship notwithstanding. I only wish he could prevent them all, so that this forum (which he graciously makes available to all) could be less cluttered with crap and more beneficial to those of us who have open minds and want to further our understanding of this exciting march of technology which we are all experiencing.

31 January 2006

01:08 by Dan Buckowski?.

A basic rootkit checker is available for Mac OS X via chkroot.org.

04 February 2006

10:06 by fafner?.

Inre: Charities

I agree with Leo’s biblical references. But there does seem to be a doulbe standard where Apple and Microsoft are concerned. If the situation were reversed would the comments have been Steve Jobs is “a wonderful human being” and Bill Gates is a”greedy so and so” and Microsoft is the “evil empire”?

11 February 2006

08:12 by Bill531 in TX?.

Andy P.. Well said.. most of us agree with you, and Leo.. His opinions are well considered and valid.. No, we don’t agree with him 100%.. But that’s why some drive GM cars, some Fords, some German cars, some Japanese, etc, etc. I’m a long time Leo fan because he does tell the truth and does give a reasonable opinion based upon the pros and cons of a product. Keep up the good work Leo!

18 February 2006

18:52 by anonymous.

There are some charaties Gates has given to, however, such as “population control” groups, that frankly disgust me enough to not use Windows.

Granted there are also rumors of Apple supporting Planned Parenthood, which isn’t one iota better.

Guess who’s using Linux.

19 February 2006

11:31 by James Daldry Raleigh NC?.

Here in Raleigh (actually, all over NC) we’ve been dealing with CableCard for over a year now. I do TV service for a living so I get to see all the problems the cards and interfaces cause. The card-ready tuners are actually slightly crippled laptops - USB, PCMCIA (CableCard is a PCMCIA card), etc. The Sony tuner runs Linux. It uses USB for the memory card reader.

23 February 2006

16:46 by Andrew Collins Boulder, CO?.

Leo, your sound clip was from “Blazing Saddles”. It’s the scene where Cleavon Little’s character finds Gene Wilder’s character in the alley drunk as a skunk.

Here is the problem I have had on over 30 of my 70 Dell Optiplex’s, and yes they are bad PS’s

PC will not turn on. When power is applied to the PC the power button illuminates amber. Pressing the power button will not turn on PC. Pressing and holding the power button has no effect. Upon removing power from the PC, the power button continues to illuminate amber for a few minutes.
The A, B, C, and D light in the rear of the PC are NOT illuminated. Changed power cable. Changed power source. PC boots normally with substitute Power Supply.

28 February 2006

13:23 by Tim?.

Bad PS?

I have a Dell PC with no power as well. Same as Donald. I took the PS out to test it. The fan comes on and the voltages are correct. I took it to a pc shop and they put the ps in another system and it started up the other computer. Any other ideas?

14 April 2006

14:56 by shamus?.

Acccording to Dell this means the psu is has got power but is unable to distribute the power to other devices. Sounds like a motherboard failure.
