With regards to “Dale in Van Nuys - hooking up DVD to VCR causes distortion”
I don’t think this is a macrovision thing b/c he was only trying to hook up his DVD player to the television and he said the splash screen did it as well. I just think he needs to change his output settings on the dvd player to Svideo.

There are two complaints about the MacBook Pro that have not been mentioned enough, or at all. The first is the lack of internal modem. Laptops are for travelling, and there is still a large part of the world where one has to use dialup. The second (I have not heard one comment) is the lack of two buttons on the trackpad. Now that Apple has finally moved to a two button mouse, it should be part of their laptops. Why not save a keystroke?

Do you hear music on the phone line your DSL service comes in on?
If, with a normal phone handset and your DSL modem disconnected, you hear music or other interference, then it’s a line issue.
most likely something called Cross-talk where a strong signal in adjacent wire causes an electromagnetic effect so strong that it induces a signal in your line.. Transformers use this effect.. Also a radio community radio station may be causing the interference.
Anyway, if you can hear the music, then bounce JUST THAT ISSUE (Crosstalk) to your telco (phone line provider)… Just like old fassioned modems, DSL doesn’t like interference, static and crackle on the line and is often the major cause of problems.

SteveW says: I have had a really good experience with VideoReDo. (http://www.videoredo.com/) This is a $50 MPEG video editor (they have a fifteen day free trial so you can try it out) which can edit .TiVo files directly - no need to convert! - provides really easy-to-use Commercial detection and cutting, and a bunch of other handy capabilities. Orville Redenbacher used to say “do one thing and do it better than anyone else” - Well, I think this is the best tool I’ve seen for what it does - editing MPEG files including Tivo. Highly recommended. And I’m just a satisfied user - I have no affiliation! Once you’ve edited your file, you can save it as a .MPG format, and use pretty much any DVD authoring tool to burn to DVD - I use Nero 7 and it works like a champ.
Also, in general, a great place to learn more about all things TiVo, including this subject, is the TiVo Community Forum - http://www.tivocommunity.com/

I use DSL Extreme based on your recommendation (usually love ‘em and refer people there). About 2 weeks ago my DSL line began acting strange.
At exactly 5PM I lose connectivity. At exactly 7AM I regain connectivity. DSL Extreme monitored this and saw the drop at the times I mentioned.
The phone company (SBC) came during the down time and checked the utility box on the corner, my box outside the house as well as the jack inside the house. They saw connectivity even though I couldn’t connect. This happens like clockwork everyday including weekends and holidays.
SBC says it’s the modem although I don’t know why my modem would know it is 5PM or 7AM. SBC says it hears loud radio music on my line. SBC says it does not see anyone tapping into my line.
I have a dedicated DSL number. The modem is only 6 ft. from my jack. I have not made any changes to my setup since I started the service and am using the same modem and PC since I joined DSL Extreme. Both DSL Extreme and SBC are pointing fingers at each other.
Anyone have any ideas what may be happening? I don’t want to go to Adelphia cable for my broadband service, but I can’t stay without night connectivity much longer since I need to connect to work from home.

Hi Tom from Michigan. Apple stated that they will be phasing out the PowerBook line throughout the year. One thing for sure that Apple is currently clearing out their inventory of 17″ and 12″ PowerBook. Apple is selling the 12″ PowerBook with Combo Drive as low as $999 at numbers of University Computer Stores. As soon as their inventory is low enough, Apple will announce the successors to 12″ and 17″ PowerBook line. Based on the rumors that circulate around the net, the 12″ PowerBook might be replaced with 13″ Widescreen MacBook. Then again, it’s not official until Apple said so.(TastesLikeLead)

Mili, based on the specs released by Apple, MacBook Pro is a great notebook. Pay no mind to the lack of Dual Layer DVD Burning Support. Pay no mind to the lower screen resolutions. Apple had to reduce the scrren resolution by 60 lines to accomodate the iSight. If you are not an Apple enthusiast, it is better to wait until MacBook Pro is actually available in-stores. That would be sometimes in February. (TastesLikeLead)

I really can’t understand the Windows fans. Why is it such a problem if someone says that Windows XP is not the best choice for the average home user? How does that hurt them?
It’s nothing other than the truth, anyway, and had best be said for the good of the innocent users.
Anyway, what’s the value of an opinion from someone who doesn’t even know how many mouse buttons OS X supports? I, like Leo, have actually *used* both XP and OS X (oh, and Linux) *extensively*.
I’ve never had a virus problem on XP, but then:
(1) I’m not an average user;
(2) statistically people do (there are actually tens of thousands of Windows viruses); and
(3) the major bugbear on Windows is not viruses but spyware. Witness this comment by Paul Thurrott - and bear in mind that Thurrott is actually a notorious Windows fanboy:
“For the first time, PC users are simply throwing out computers that are infested with spyware, rather than trying to fix them.”
Good grief, when even Thurrott admits there is a problem … when even Microsoft admits to the Wall Street Journal that Windows is broken:
http://www.wsjclassroomedition.com/archive/06jan/bigb_microsoft.htm
- then one has to wonder why people are so eager to defend it.

Documents Two-page FBI letter to Newt Gingrich Page 1 of 2 U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation Washington, DC 20535 April 21, 1994 Honorable Newt Gingrich House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Congressman Gingrich: I am writing in further response to your March 3rd inquiry on behalf of Mr. George Zimmerlee. Mr. Zimmerlee posed a number of question about the actions of the federal government during the standoff at Waco, Texas. During the law enforcement operation at Waco against the Branch Davidians, the FBI assumed responsibility for bringing this dangerous barricade situation to a resolution. This included setting in place a physical and electronic perimeter around the crisis site to prevent further escalation of the incident. It is essential during an operation of this type to control communications into and out of the crisis site. The Branch Davidians had the means to send and receive communications, and the FBI took steps to deny those communications except to the on-scene FBI negotiators. I want to emphasize that such actions were taken in an attempt to avoid further loss of life and to try to bring the crisis to an early resolution. All electronic operations were conducted in accordance with U.S. law and international agreements. The on-site electronic operations received close scrutiny and were approved by an Assistant United States Attorney at the Waco Command Post. All required statutory and administrative authorizations were received from competent authority, including the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which is the Executive Branch agency responsible for advising the President on telecommunications and information policies and carrying out related functions in accordance with Executive Order 12046. End of page 1 of 2 pages
Two-page FBI letter to Newt Gingrich Page 2 of 2 Furthermore, article 133 of the International Telecommunications Convention states: “Members also reserve the right to cut off any other private telecommunications which may appear dangerous to the security of the state or contrary to its laws, to public order or to decency.” The Federal Communications Commission was also on the scene at the invitation of the FBI and acted in its capacity to ensure operations were in accordance with U.S. laws and regulations. In summary, the electronic operations at Waco were conducted in accordance with all U.S. laws and international agreements. We hope this will clarify the questions raised by Mr. Zimmerlee. Sincerely yours, (signature) John H. Kaul Legislative Counsel Office of Public and Congressional Affairs End of page 2 of 2 pages Analysis This document has great value as a case study for medical students studying psychiatric disorders, and law students studying corruption in the Justice Department, to learn just how dangerous people in government really are. Government techniques of lies, distortion, misrepresentation, euphemism, and misapplication of statute are addressed by paragraph. Para. 1. Mr. Kaul does not address the questions raised about jamming radio and television broadcasters in the Waco area, he does not even mention it, yet Congressman Gingrich does not care that Kaul answers no questions. Para. 2. The euphemism used here is “electronic perimeter” in place of deliberate radio interference, which is a crime under 47 USC 305, and 47 USC 333.
Two-page FBI letter to Newt Gingrich Analysis Para. 3. Controlling communications is essential only in a tactical military situation. Therefore, Kaul reveals tactical battlefield military operations, not law enforcement. Kaul refers to a means of sending and receiving communications and admits to jamming or “deny communications” to the amateur radio station at Mount Carmel Center. FBI’s jamming kept its unwillingness to negotiate in good faith a secret. The finding and recommendation of the subcommittees in the 1995 House Waco Hearings is that FBI’s absolute control over negotiations was wrong. There was, therefore, no need to control communications. Para. 4. Euphemism “electronic operations” used in place of deliberate radio interference. Violations were rampant. FBI had no warrant to tap telephones, or to divert telephone lines, or to intercept cellular communications (a violation of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act), or to violated the Communications Act by using deliberate jamming. Neither the U.S. Attorneys, nor the NTIA have given any support to FBI’s claim of authorization from these agencies. Indeed all documents have been classified to avoid criminal prosecution. Para. 5. Article 133 does not nullify other parts of the ITU rules (International Radio Law), especially Article 44 which outlaws jamming. The conditions of Article 133 were not met. The amateur radio station was no danger to security and the operators broke no law and complied with FCC rules. Radio jamming cannot be supported by law in peacetime, and violates the Constitution’s protection of free speech. Only government stations violated ITU rules.
Return to The Evidence forImpeachment <impeach.html> Para. 6. This deception is easily exposed. When FCC supplied the jamming equipment (as reported in Dallas Morning News <dmn0493.html>) it became a co-conspirator with other agencies to violate the very Act for which it was created to execute and enforce. Para. 7. Euphemism, “electronic operations” used in place of deliberate radio interference. FBI-FCC operations violated 47 USC 305, 47 USC 326, 47 USC 333, Articles 44 of the ITU rules, and Article 19 of (United Nations) International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Classification of documents to hide evidence and avoid criminal prosecution is a crime also. Para. 8. Kaul hopes only to confuse and mislead. Clarification would require Kaul to answer the question on deliberate jamming of radio and television broadcasters.
Kaul reveals tactical battlefield military operations, not law enforcement.

If you have a home DSL router, or if you use the “Internet Connection Sharing” feature of your favorite operating system product, you’re in violation because these connection sharing technologies use NAT. Most operating system products (including every version of Windows introduced in the last five years, and virtually all versions of Linux) would also apparently be banned, because they support connection sharing via NAT.

Evan Doorbell formed with Ben and Neil a group of phreaks known as Group Bell. Mark Bernay started a similar group called the Mark Bernay Society. Both Mark and Evan are semi-famous characters in phone phreaking today for their internet publication of their collection of telephone exploration recordings. Computer hackers started to use phreaking skills to find telephone numbers for modems belonging to businesses, which they could exploit. Groups were formed around the BBS hacker/phreaking (H/P) community such as the famous Masters of Deception (Phiber Optik) and Legion of Doom (Erik Bloodaxe) groups. In 1985 an underground e-zine called Phrack (a combination of the words Phreak and Hack) started circulation among BBSes, that focused on hacking, phreaking, and other related technology subjects.
In the early 1990s H/P groups like Masters of Deception and Legion of Doom were shut down by the US Secret Service’s Operation Sundevil Phreaking as a subculture saw a brief dispersion in fear of criminal prosecution in the 1990s, before the popularity of the internet created a re-emergence of phreaking as a subculture in the US, and also spread phreaking globally.

Back when I was playing with my C64 I remember school warehouses full of Apple computers. Great marketing strategy to give them away and sell them cheap to schools. Now all the kids have all grown up and have a soft spot for Apple.
I can see the lack of choice and sameness that the masses like and that is what Apple excels at.
From the need to figure out how to use product a with hardware b with software c I found user groups and became a nerd. I have a collection of pocket protectors.
I think that people should learn the ins and outs of a computer: memory, processor, hard drive space, CD ROM or RW etc. Just as people who don’t know the difference between a transaxle and a transmission will have problems getting repairs at a fair price, people that don’t know the difference between hard drive gigabytes and RAM gigabytes will be at a loss as well.
We live in an increasingly technical world. We should have a working knowledge of what we are dealing with. Computers are here to stay and will not be the kind that Kirk and Sulu use for a long time. We need to be able to solve our problems and be able to describe our problems to those that can do this for us.
Thanks for letting me vent.

I believe my PC is actively under attack. My windows XP pc has been getting slower and slower over the last few weeks. I recently ran NETSTAT 10 to monitor communications and ports.
I see the following:
Local:2128 shirane.jaist.ac.jp:58051 ESTABLISHED
Local:2130 elmo.isy.liu.se:62896 TIME_WAIT
Should I be worried? What should I do? If I physically disconnect the PC from my network, my delays go away and my performance increases dramatically.
If you can’t help today, where should I post?

Is Apple Invading Your Privacy?
Oliver Kaven - PC MagazineThu Jan 12, 2:12 PM ET
Yestersday’s update to Apple iTunes 6.0.2 was followed by a fierce discussion on various blogs about the possibility of Apple spying on its users’ listening habits. Here at PC Magazine, we began dissecting the issue, one IP packet at a time.
What we know
What we know so far is that yesterday’s update to iTunes 6.0.2 (6.0.2.23) added a feature called “MiniStore.” The MiniStore is a split window on the bottom of the iTunes application that displays additional albums for purchase from the same artist as the song playing in the active selection. It also shows alternative titles that were purchased by other iTunes customers who also own the title playing in the active selection.
The MiniStore is active in the “Library” view as well as the “Purchased” songs view. Users can minimize the MiniStore by selecting the appropriate icon on the bottom right of the screen.
We also know that this kind of targeted album advertising relies on communication between the player (iTunes) and the database provider (Apple) that serves the ad to the music player.

Apple isn’t spying on anyone. The MiniStore looks at what you’re playing, then offers up other titles by the artist. Big freaking deal. If Apple is spying, so is Amazon.
Everyone who wrote that Apple is spying retracted the claim within hours.
I like the MiniStore. It’s already pointed me at music I didn’t know existed. If Apple knows what music I listen to, again so what.
I’m getting e-mail from Amazon these days that points me to books and other items I might be interested in. I don’t feel spied upon, I feel catered to.
Regarding Apple iTunes MiniStore
I don’t think that it is something new. The fact is that similar feature is present in Windows Media Player.
I don’t think Apple is really spying on you.

You definitely have more choices. Arguably a large number of your choices in any category are mediocre. I.e. there may be 5000 word processors out there but everyone uses Word. One area where your choices are DEFINITELY CLEAR is in games.
This does not create your opportunity for problems though. That is purely based on issues with Windows. Apple had reached a similar point with the old Mac OS a few years ago. It was crap. It had turned into a mess that no one wanted to write code for. I hated programming the Macintosh. They had one choice, create a new OS.
Microsoft needs to do the same thing now. It’s time to junk Windows and create a new OS from the ground up and stop punishing people just becuase their marketshare guarantees their profitability.

I can’t get through after a year of trying. I want to defend Windows. I have had XP Pro since the preview in summer 01. I have always had a version of NAV or NIS and have no problems other than the fact that I keep downloading and installing and uninstalling. Once or twice a year I reinstall Windows from a formatted drive.
I have NEVER had a virus infect my computer. Roadrunner has lately caught a bunch before I get my email but I don’t have any spyware or virus problems.
In 1983 I bought a C64 when the price went from $600 to $200. I played with it and had fun.
In 1993 I shopped around for a computer to take advantage of the “new” CD ROM. I could have gone to an Amiga, Mac, PC or whatever. I picked PC because of price and freedom of choice. Amiga was out because it was going away. I stayed away from Mac because it was expensive and was completely controlled.
With a PC, I have more opportunity for problems because I have more opportunity of choice.
I have 5 mouse buttons and the wheel. A Mac still has one.
Thank you for letting me vent. I have been saving this up for a long time.
Get more lines and stay on for six hours as I might have a chance to get through. (:-)

More people may use Windows, but so what? These days it’s all Microsoft can do to keep the OS viable. When entire countrys and states just throw their hands up and say, “NO MORE WINDOWS,” more than just a little bit is wrong.
And to be honest, the only thing that Microsoft ever did right was license DOS to IBM. That was the lightning strike. When people bougt PCs they were buying IBM, not Microsoft. In the end, IBM accidentally created a monster.
After that all Microsoft ever does is copy, steal, and coerce, or as they put it, “embrace and extend.”
In the computer industry Apple has constantly been the tail wagging the dog. Countless features that people take for granted came first from Apple, and then trickled down to the PC and spread to the masses. Arguably it makes a great deal of sense to spend lots of time talking about Apple.

No more Windows Media for the Mac! Hoooray! Hey Leo. I have a theory here. Lots of people use Windows Media because it’s, well, there. They also mistakenly believe that “everyone” will be able to view their content. Now that Microsoft has clearly dumped Windows Media for Mac, I suspect that more people will move to QuickTime to make sure their content is consumable across both of the major platforms. I.e. dropping support for the Mac will hurt Windows Media.

Q Dan in Kalamazoo, Michigan - Importing IE stuff into Firefox
Is it safe? Absolutely. If you want to be really careful, delete cookies in the Firefox menu.
He’s also having torouble installing MSN Messenger. I recommend Trillian instead. You can chat on the Messenger network but it’s not nearly as intrusive as the Microsoft program.

He upgraded his G4 Mac with a Belkin 2.0 card, but now the old ports won’t work. It’s probably a “feature” so you’ll only use the 2.0 speed connectors. I’d just buy a USB 2.0 powered hub and use the new ports only.

Sounds like the best thing to do is uninstall Adobe Reader 7 and use an older version (which is just as good, by the way).

According to this thread it’s a common problem with Adobe Reader 7, and there doesn’t appear to be a fix (although you might want to try downloading a newer version - Adobe may have fixed it by now). Otherwise, uninstall Adobe Reader 7 and use an older version (which is just as good, by the way).

He uses Tivo2go to copy files to his PC for burning, but wants to edit them before burning. The problem is they’re in a proprietary, encrypted, format and can’t be edited. You’ll need to find a hack to unencrypt and convert to AVI - or burn the DVD then rip it back and edit it.
