Tech News

Leo is at the ewaste round up. Show notes will be up later today if noone else does it.

11a-Noon

Noon-1p

NOD32 - http://www.nod32.com - Randy Abrams, (unlike Dvorak, Randy GETS SPAM!) Director of Technical Education, talks with Leo about their antivirus program.
Virus are now tending to spread faster requiring advanced software to predict a threat before it attacks.

Vicky has problems accessing WEB after an install of a non-NOD32 anti Virus. Leo says try using Internet Explorer in place of Net-ZERO software. Perhaps a re-install of NET-ZERO will do it.

Bob from Colorado wants to know how to record the program over the Internet. One option is to use a software recorder like N-Track Studio to record, while you listen with the standard KFI link. He is also having problems reading his old hard drive after upgrading to a new one. But fortunately he has backups as no fix is obvious.

Nick from Temple City says he uses a package called Total Recorder (http://www.highcriteria.com/). It comes in three levels and is VERY powerful. It allows capture from any source, internal or external and has editing capability. The standard edition is only $11.95. It can also launch a URL on a timer.

Brad from Glendale programs in COBAL, wow. He did a reinstall and is looking for reseting his personalized menus in word. Leo will walk him through it off air as each version requires different changes.

1–2p

Jeff in Florida - Yes, you can use your computer to make landline calls. All telephony modems (at least all of the ones I have had) can be use with a headset in the manner you described (And which the esteemed Mr. Laporte had trouble understanding). You will need software to dial, etc. but if you have answering machine software, it may be built in, so check that first. Otherwise, you may want to hit the modem manufacturer’s site. They may have it available for download. Google turned up about a bagillion different products, but personally, buying anything that you let dial out of your machine from an unknown company scares me a bit. - Austin from Denver

Nicolas from Whittier - asked about problems with bittorent effecting his router. I just read this article in the Nov `05 CPU magazine called “Tweak your Torrents”.

From the Article:”This occurs because the client is using more simultaneous connections to the Internet than some routers can handle.
BitTorrent doesn’t have an easy way to limit connections from within its interface, so dropped-connection sufferers may want to switch to Azureus. In Azureus open the Tools menu, click Options, and highlight the Transfer item. Go to the last box labeled Maximum Number Of Connections Globally. Many routers choke when the client tries to open 300 or more connections at a time” - CPU Magazine, Nov 2005, Software Tips & Tricks pg.93
