Happy Valentine’s Day!

Andrew in Redlands has an interesting problem. The Advanced tab is missing on his Internet Explorer options. This may have been caused by spyware - download and run AdAware or Spybot to remove the spyware, then follow these steps to correct the problem

  • Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start→Run and entering “regedit” then click OK.
  • On the left side click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software,Policies, Microsoft, Internet Explorer, Control Panel.
  • You will see three entries in this area, they are…..(default) REG_SZ & Programs Tab_REG-DWORD & General Tab REG-DWORD. To the right of these there is a section with #’s in it referred to as “Data”. The Data associated with the General Tab should read 0×00000000 (0)… if that data has a 1(one) instead of a 0 (zero) you need to change that data value back to 0 (zero).

To do that do this….. right click on General Tab………click modify…. make sure here is a dot in Hexadecimal selecting it….and the number to the left under (Value Data) change that number to a 0 (zero). Close the registry edit. After you do this the Internet Option under Tools will be normal again.

Gene from Pala backed up all his data using Roxio’s DirectCD. His hard drive died but the CDs appear blank now. Yikes.

When you burn with packet writing software like DirectCD it doesn’t write a table of contents and lead out until you close the CD. That means the CD can’t be read on a system without a packet writing driver installed. If you still can’t read it, try CD recovery software like the free CD Check or BadCopy Pro (it’s not free but there is a free trial version) or Naltech’s CD Data Rescue. The latter specializes in DirectCD discs.

Brenda in Lake Paris has a Windows 98 computer that says it’s been shutdown improperly every time. This is a well known problem with 98. Run Windows Update then click Product Updates and select Window IDE Hard Drive Cache Package. Download and install to fix this problem.

According to Windows Help it may also be necessary to update the registry key to CacheWriteDelay which specifies the number of milliseconds of required delay.

  • Start the Registry Editor
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
  • On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
      Value Name: CacheWriteDelay
      Data Type: REG_DWORD
      Radix: Decimal
      Value: 2000
  • Exit RegEdit and restart Windows
