In the 2p hour, Scott Wilkinson of Ultimate AV Magazine joins us to talk about choosing the best big screen TV and other holiday home theater delights.

Mike B’s trivia question of the day

In 1983, what piece of hardware did Microsoft introduce that continues to be a successful product, although when it was first introduced, many people didn’t know what to do with it? 1.
a) Microsoft Digitizer
b) Microsoft Mouse
c) Microsoft Touchpad
d) Microsoft Keyboard

Noon-1p

Drew in North Carolina

http://drewsdjservice.com

BlueBoi says that IE and Firefox run in Quirks mode unless a special DOCTYPE puts it into Standards mode, or Almost Standard mode.

Mozilla.org DOCTYPEs

Darrin in Carlsbad - spyware

1–2p

Terry in Hemet - Sony Vaio no XP install disk

Use the tool to create your install disc.

Jeff in Ohio - First discs of his Star Trek DVDs won’t play

This can happen with a particularly complicated DVD.

Joe in Tennessee - laptop with bluetooth

Wants to use his Jabra bluetooth headset with the laptop. The headset bonds but it’s not showing up as a usable service. I’d check with Linksys, the providers of the bluetooth dongle, to see if they support headsets.

One way to get further help with this is to try and run an audio setup process (Yahoo instant messenger client has a good one) The audio setup process will take you through testing the recording (voice) and playback (ear piece volume). If this works try using a free VOIP (Voice Over Internet) service and make some free test calls. Freeworld Dialup is a good place to start. If you still have issues, Freeworld Dialup have user support forums & mailing lists.

Chris in Lakewood - needs Windows 2000 password

mp3mooch|p4 from the chat room recommends “Colin Keigher’s Weblog”: Password recovery on an NT machine using Knoppix STD - this gives instructions on how to recover a password from the same file.

HDTV Content

HD-DVD and BluRay coming out in one year.

HDTV
www.antennaweb.org

Voom!
30 HD channels

Jim in Lakewood writes:

I’m able to get over the air content in Lakewood, CA with this Radio Shack Bow Tie antenna inside my home and I go to this website to get listings of HD content.

Kathleen in Santa Clarita - DLP or LCD?

Scott likes DLP. LCOS looks better than LCD

Zach in Santa Monica - get a replacement warranty?

not on most things, but a big screen TV probably

Steve in Lakewood - surround sound system for under $500

Get a Home Theater in a Box. Panasonic, Sony, Bose, and others make good systems in that price range. Don’t expect room rattling sound, but they get the job done.
