Introduction

Have you ever wanted to run your own webcam page similar to Leo’s, have your friends spy on you when they have free time, or have a home security system or want to put a webcam on your site? This guide will tell you how. In this guide I am going to use webcamXP, it is not free but a very great program worth paying for. The price varys depending on which version you get. You can also you the free 21 day trial. You could use other software but this guide covers webcamXP

Purchasing Hardware

You may need to buy a webcam if you don’t already have one, you can find these at almost every computer store. If you have a camera that supports Firewire you can use it for a camera if you have a Firewire card/slot on your computer, however it may require special drivers to do it, these are avalible from: http://www.webcamdv.com If you have an older video camera without firewire you can still use it as a webcamera, to do this you will need a TV Tuner that has A/V Composite inputs, I bought one from NewEgg.com for around $30
If you use the TV tuner method run a A/V Composite cable from the video port to the input on the TV Tuner.

Once you have a webcam your set as far as hardware goes.

Step by Step

1. Download/Purchase Webcam XP there is a trial avaliable on the site.
2. Follow installer directions to install webcamXP
3. Once in WebcamXP you’ll notice the nice interface with allot of features.
4. You’ll notice a box that say “no source connected” right click in the box and select connect and that will show you a menu with a list of devices find your webcam or TV tuner and select it. Video should then show up.
5. Now that your webcam is setup you can play around with setting and get comfortable with the program.
6. You may want to remove the webcamXP overlay and put your own in to replace it. To do this click the overlay tab on the right side of your screen then Overlay Editor.

7. Access your webcam goto http://[YOURIP]:8080 to figure out your ip goto IP Chicken you may want to get a domain name to make it easier to access.

8. To adjust the webcam’s page colors click the big tab that says options and on the right side there are many options for your webcam. Customize it to your liking and your done.

9. Changing the port: to change your webcam’s port click the big tab that says brodcast/web, in this tab you will see allot of options. the one you want are the first few options on the left side. To change the port first click Stop Server the port box will become ungrayed, now change the number 8080 your desired port, if your not running a webserver you can set this to port 80 so you could access your webcam at http://[YOURIP]

Troubleshooting

HELP why isn’t my webcam page loading?
This could be because your firewall/router is blocking the port, try forwarding port 80 on your router or firewall to your internal IP.
