Ever since Microsoft shipped Windows XP creating a boot disk has become much trickier. You can’t simply make a floppy with DOS and some utilities on it. DOS won’t read the NT file system, and most DOS utilities are useless (or worse) with XP discs. And yet a boot disk is a critical tool for rescuing a downed system. Many folks have solved this conundrum by rolling their own boot CDs. Here is a list of some recommendations from listeners.

Changed line 5 from:
  • http://www.sysresccd.org/index.en.php SysRescue An open source that contains “Ghost like” and “Partition magic” like software.
to:
  • http://62.253.162.19/hiren.thanki/bootcd.html Hiren’s Boot CD - an illegal (yet very useful) compilation of disk utilities on one CD. I removed utilities I don’t already own from mine (to ease my conscience) and update the anti-virus definitions and re-burn regularly. This is a wildly useful disc.
Changed line 7 from:
  • http://www.bootdisk.com/ Bootdisk - just basic boot disks.
to:
  • http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/ The Ultimate Boot CD - A boot CD that contains about 50 DOS and Linux based tools
Changed line 9 from:
  • Also just as important is an easy way to burn these .ISO image files. I use http://www.ramsinks.com/images/ISORecorderSetup.msi ISOrecorder. Just right-click an ISO and “burn to CD”, or right-click a CDROM with a CD in it “make .ISO file”.

Deleted lines 20-21:
  • Passprop http://www.petri.co.il/download_free_reskit_tools.htm

Great website for Windows 2000 System Administrator tools. Passprop will actually let system administrators to recover their login passwords if locked out. Check it out. I believe this is for only Windows 2000.

Deleted lines 21-22:
  • Way of logging into WindowsXP if locked out or forgot password

But, as Leo said, to recover the WindowsXP Administrator password you have to have the Linux Boot Disk and look for the SAM File, and then rename or delete that SAM file. The SAM file is located in C:/Windows/System32/Config/SAM
