SDP - to record the radio show (Windows)

Want to record Leo’s show for yourself? The best program that Dan, our chat moderator, has found is called the “Streaming Download Project” which is also known as SDP. You can get the software by going to SDP’s web site at http://sdp.ppona.com/.

To record the show, enter the URL http://ccdig.liquidviewer.com/kfi and set up “VCR mode” to have automatic recording of the show to your hard drive. This way you can listen to the show whenever, and wherever you want.

It is a nice program, but I have never been able to figure out the URL’ of the streams that I was interested in. For example, how did you come up with http://ccdig.liquidviewer.com/kfi?

If you look at the sourcecode for the page in which the webradio is on you will see a url buried in the code. -RHNet

You can also right-click on the link, choose Copy Shortcut, and paste it into SDP. For a comprehensive list of radio stations with streaming content check out http://www.radio-locator.com.

IrfanView - Graphics Viewer (Windows)

Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003

UPDATES: IrfanView turns 3.95!

IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for
non-commercial use) graphic viewer. It is my “must-have” Windows
(non-security) software pick. Add the all PlugIns file (all_plugins.exe)
for maximum utility.

XnView another free graphics viewer

Windows/Linux/BSD/Solaris/Mac/PocketPC

If you work in multiple platforms you might want to consider XnView. It is also free for non-commercial use and has Windows, Mac, BSD, Solaris, and Linux versions which I like since I have a dual boot Linux/Windows machine. It reads more different graphic file formats than I’ve ever heard of (useful if you have Amiga files lying around), and has English, French, and German versions. It also includes a command line file format converter. You can also run the windows executable from a CDR without installing the application if you happen to work somewhere that frowns upon users installing their own software. The Windows download is 3.2 Mb and the Linux RPM is 1.3 Mb. It’s available at http://www.xnview.com

FileNote - File Annotation (Windows)

Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP/NT

Whenever I download a piece of software, I create a text file with the same name as the .zip or setup program file and copy & paste the description of what the program does, along with any other information I think might be useful, into it. This way, when I’m looking through my downloads months later I can open up the text file and see what that program is. But opening a text file and renaming it is waaayy too much work for me, so I rely on a nifty little program called FileNote to do it for me. All I do is right-click on the file I want to create a note for and choose FileNote from the menu. It automatically creates a new text document with the same name, ready for me to paste the program description into it (which I usually copy from the download page, thus saving me from any of that nasty typing nonsense). You can use it make notes on any type of file, not just program files. You can get it at MoonSoftware.com.

DFIncBackup - Full and Incremental backups (Windows)

Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

You looking for a great and free way to make backups of your data? Well I have found a great application that will do both full and incremental backups. The best part is that it all backups are in zip format. Saves you time cause you don’t have to install your backup software on another computer should you need to.

Here’s an excellent list from Aaron Wormus (it’s a Wiki, too!)
