Q How can I participate in the show?

The best way is to call in at 1–88–88-ASK LEO - toll free in the US. You can watch live video of the show at http://live.twit.tv, http://www.stickam.com/leolaporte, or http://ustream.tv/channel/leo-laporte-live. Both Stickam and Ustream have chat rooms associated with the video streams. There’s also an IRC chat room at http://irc.twit.tv.

Q Why is the #techguy chat closed when the show is not on?

The #techguy chat channel is only for chatting during the Leo Laporte Show. If you would like to chat during off hours, the chat channel #townsquare is available. In your IRC client just type /join #townsquare - all of us are waiting for you!

The #techguy room will become “invite only” (i.e. closed to new chatters) once Leo’s show is over. Shortly after Leo leaves the chat, all will be removed from the channel and asked to go to #townsquare. The channel moderators will try to give one or two minutes warning to allow the chatters to finish their conversations.

Yes. I edit out the commercials and news and traffic and post the shows as MP3s on my site. You find links to the chatlogs and radio show stored with the show notes in the Past Shows section. You can download nearly any of the over 300 shows I’ve done since I started at KFI in January 2004 from the Audio Archives section. You can also subscribe to the podcast and automatically receive each show as soon as it is posted (roughly one week after it airs). The podcast is on iTunes or visit the Audio Archives pages for more information.

Q I miss Call for Help and The Screen Savers. Are you on TV any more?

I am but not in the US. TechTV was sold to Comcast’s G4 videogame cable channel in April 2004. The new owners cancelled Call for Help and let most of the staff go. G4 eventually killed my other show, The Screen Savers, as well.

G4techTV Canada revived Call for Help in August 2004. In Canada watch us on G4techTV Weekdays at 6 and 9p Eastern. In Australia watch on the HOW TO Channel weekdays at 10:30p AEST

Q I’m confused. What’s the difference between G4techTV Canada and G4 US?

The Canadians wear toques. Just kidding.

G4techTV Canada is only 30% owned by Comcast. Rogers and Shaw, the big Canadian cable companies, are majority partners. Rogers runs the channel from Toronto. In the past they’ve been content to simply take the TechTV feed and replay it (in different order and with Canadian content salted in). But two things happened to prompt them to call me. 1. The Canadian FCC, the CRTC, requires them to increase the amount of Canadian content to 50% next year. 2. Call for Help was their most popular show. Unlike the US, Canada ran Call for Help five times a day, with a first run in prime time at 9p Eastern.

When the US channel canned me and cancelled CFH, the Canadians called right away. To fulfill the CRTC requirements I have to go to Toronto to do the show, and the entire staff must be Canadian. It’s ok with me. Rogers loves the show, loves me, and is putting in the resources necessary to make it even better than before. Aside from the commute (one week a month in Toronto) this is the best job I’ve ever had. I don’t even mind the commute that much!

We’re hopeful that other International markets that loved Call for Help (and that’s nearly all of them: The Phillipines, New Zealand, Pakistan, Dubai, etc etc.) will buy the show. It’s already available in Australia on the HOW TO Channel.

Deleted lines 44-55:

Q Why isn’t the wiki word of the week in the chat topic or mentioned in the chat?

Leo wants the wiki word to only be known to those who listen to the show, as a result, the wiki word is not posted in the #KFI topic. Additionally, mentioning the wiki word in the chat is not permitted. Posting of the wiki word in the chat can lead to warning, kicking, banning, or devoicing by a channel moderator.

Q What is the wiki word?

The wiki word is the password that Leo gives out on the show every week. It allows you to edit pages on the wiki, or create new ones. The wiki word was put in place so that only KFI listeners can change or add to the wiki, it keeps random passers by from changing things.

Q Does Leoville.tv protect my posted email address from spammers?

No. I don’t recommend posting your real email address anywhere on this or any web site. Spammers are known to harvest addresses from the web. For technical reasons I haven’t implemented the EProtect code on this wiki, but you can easily modify your address to protect yourself, for example by using leo@REMOVETHISleoville.com instead of leo@leoville.com.

Q Can I upload (link) any images from other web sites?

You can place an image into any page by putting the direct URL to that image in the text followed by a space or newline. However, please be aware of any potential copyright issues and remember it’s not nice to suck images from someone else’s site if they can’t afford the extra bandwidth.

Probably the best way to do it is to make the image a link back to the site, so they at least get a link in return. For example, use this sytax:

[[http://mysitelink.com |http://mysite.com/image.jpg]]

Q How do I add an entry onto the ‘Tips’ list if there isn’t a topic already listed for my tip?

The Tips index page is just another wiki page - you can edit it and add any topics you think people would be interested in reading. When you enclose a topic in double braces, {{ like so }} that’s a signal to the wiki that the enclosed words are a link to another wiki page. If the page doesn’t exist you’ll have a chance to create and edit the page after you save the index. If you’re confused, try it in the Main/WikiSandbox first.

You can place an image into any page by putting the direct URL to that image in the text followed by a space or newline. However, please be aware of any potential Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags copyright issues and remember it’s not nice to suck images from someone else’s site if they can’t afford the extra bandwidth.

Probably the best way to do it is to make the image a link back to the site, so they at least get a link in return. For example, use this sytax:

Q What are the #KFI chat rules?

The channel operators want the chat to be a nice safe place since it represents Leo and KFI 640. As a result, please follow these simple rules:

  • No spamming of web sites for either personal or commercial purposes. Posting a web site once is OK, just don’t do it repeatedly.
  • No shouting (i.e. TYPING IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS).
  • No harassment of chatters. You can respectfully disagree, but don’t be rude.
  • Do not impersonate any moderator.
  • Keep the conversation at most, PG rated since there is a wide range of ages in the chat. Anything deemed offensive will not be tolerated.
  • Politics is not to be discussed and will not be tolerated.
  • The channel is to talk tech, not tech support. Go to http://www.leovilletownsquare.com Leoville Town Square and post your question. Many of the people in the chat, plus hundreds more frequently read the boards and you are most likely to get a more detailed answer to your question there.
  • If you have been devoiced for a violation, DO NOT cycle the channel to regain voice This will result in removal from the channel, no questions asked. Please wait to be re-voiced by a moderator.
  • Do have fun!

Q Does Leo come into the chat?

Yes, he does! His nick is “KFI_Leo.” Leo tries to chat when there are news and commerical breaks, but don’t feel badly if he doesn’t respond. Doing a radio show, live ads, keeping track of the waiting callers, researching answers to caller’s questions, finding bumper music, and reading the chat keeps him quite busy.

Q What is the role of the #KFI chat moderator?

The chat moderators are there to keep the channel focused, fun, and family friendly. Since the chat is a component of the show, they try to keep the chat on topic (which is anything related to technology or anything Leo mentions) but an occasional off topic conversation about food or a baseball game is OK.

Q Who are the chat moderators?

They are Dan, KFI_Leo, Mike_B, Smooshi, and Sweeks.

Q What are the #KFI chat rules?

The channel operators want the chat to be a nice safe place since it represents Leo and KFI 640. As a result, please follow these simple rules:

  1. No spamming of web sites for either personal or commerical purposes. Posting a web site once is OK, just don’t do it repeatedly.
  2. No shouting (i.e. TYPING IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS)
  3. No harrasment of chatters. You can respectfully disagree, but don’t be rude.
  4. Do not impersonate any moderator.
  5. Keep the conversation at most, PG rated since there is a wide range of ages in the chat. Anything deemed offensive will not be tolerated.

  7. Do have fun!

The moderators do try to be fair, however, if you break the rules you can be de-voiced (no one will see what you are typing), kicked from the channel, banned from the channel, or banned (“klined”) from the IRC server.

Q What are some tips for getting on the show?

  1. Think of a question that will be interesting to the audience.
  2. Make sure your question is not a “tech support” call.
  3. Sound energetic and upbeat to the call screener.
  4. If on a cell phone, make sure you have a strong signal.
  5. Call as early in the show as possible, best time to call is 12:07PM Pacific. If Leo is doing “extra hours” to record shows for when he is on vacation, call then.
  6. Relax and have a blast!

The new Call for Help will debut on G4techTV Canada on August 16 at 6p Eastern. It will repeat at 9p Eastern.

When the US channel canned me and CFH, the Canadians called right away. I don’t even mind the commute that much!\\

Q I’m confused. What’s the difference between G4techTV Canada and G4techTV US?

The Canadians wear toques. Just kidding.

We syndicated the show nationally and I’ve been doing computer help ever since. In 1994 I started doing it on TV and my shows http://callforhelptv.com Call for Help and http://thescreensavers.com The Screen Savers aired for six years on ZDTV and later TechTV. I am currently hosting http://callforhelptv.com Call for Help in Canada, but I hope to get it back on the air in the States Real Soon Now.
