Chris Marquardt on Photography

Episode 1540 (59:50)

Chris Marquardt

Chris says there are a lot of symbols and buttons on cameras, some standardized, some specialized. Here's a few:

1. Your DSLR/MILC camera will have a zoom range, with an infinity symbol, followed by a little "L" on its side. Lenses can actually go beyond infinity, which is odd. So the sideways L is there to back off a bit.
2. On the right side of the viewfinder, you'll see a circle with a line through it. That's the focal plane indicator, or the point where image censor physically is. This helps in making really precise manual focusing with a tape measure. Some cameras will even have a hook to hold the tape measure.

Universal symbols like the trash can, play button, magnifying glass are all pretty self explanatory.

This month's photo assignment is "Glasses". Take a photo of, about or otherwise concerning the concept of "Glasses" and then post it to the Tech Guy Group on Flickr. Make sure to tag it with the word "Glasses" as well! And if Chris likes it, it could end up on next month's photo contest review segment!
