This week, the topic is the Amazon Fire TV Cube. Scott hasn't tried the Fire TV ecosystem yet, but the Cube looks pretty interesting. Scott also says he's hesitant because it listens to your every word. It uses Alexa to operate, and it supports 4K, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos at home. Scott says that HLG, or Hybrid Log Gamma, is the latest HDR codec. Leo says that the Cube is cool because it will work off your voice. So you tell it to watch a title, and it will search to find it.
Scott also wants to talk about sound bars, which Leo says is the number one home theater topic he gets questions on. Will sound bars do Atmos? Scott says yes, they can, but they do it with upfiring speakers that bounce the sound off your ceiling. How well does it work? Scott says that good models include LG, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Yamaha, and even Vizio. And they work surprisingly well, though you get only two channels of overhead sound.
So if you're going to buy a soundbar, it may pay to get a sound bar that supports Dolby Atmos at home. Which model isn't too expensive? Scott says that Vizio is the way to go, since you'll get the most bang for your buck and only spend a few hundred dollars.
